Menopause

Gynecologic support through perimenopause and menopause, in a calm consultation with time to listen.

Menopause is a natural stage of a woman's life, but its symptoms do not have to be lived in silence. At the consultation we assess each case individually, explain the options available and decide together on the most suitable follow-up plan.

What is menopause

Menopause is the point when periods stop permanently, confirmed once twelve months in a row have passed without a period. It usually happens around the age of 50, although every woman is different. The years before, when cycles begin to change, are called perimenopause. After that comes postmenopause.

Common symptoms

Not every woman notices them in the same way or with the same intensity:

  • Changes in periods: shorter, longer or irregular cycles.
  • Hot flushes and night sweats.
  • Sleep disturbances and mood changes.
  • Vaginal dryness, discomfort during intercourse or recurrent urinary infections.
  • Changes in sexual desire.
  • Joint pain or tiredness.

Having some of these symptoms does not mean there is a serious problem, but it is worth a consultation if they affect your daily life.

When to consult

  • If symptoms bother you or stop you from resting or working normally.
  • If your period changes markedly before the age of 45, or stops before 40.
  • If you have gone through menopause and bleed again: this is a reason to consult without waiting.
  • If you have questions about your bone, cardiovascular or intimate health.
  • If you have personal or family history that worries you.

What the consultation is like

  1. We talk, with timeMedical history: symptoms, personal and family background, medication and habits.
  2. ExaminationWhatever is needed in each case, explaining each step to you.
  3. Tests, only if neededWe tell you which ones and why.
  4. Options and shared decisionWe explain the alternatives and decide the plan together.
  5. Follow-upCheck-ups to adjust the plan if necessary.

Management options

There is no single solution. The plan is decided with each woman according to her symptoms, history and preferences:

  • Lifestyle: physical activity, diet, rest, tobacco and alcohol.
  • Hormonal treatments: in certain cases, after weighing benefits and risks individually.
  • Non-hormonal treatments: for specific symptoms, such as hot flushes or sleep.
  • Intimate health and pelvic floor: guidance for dryness and discomfort, and referral when appropriate.

Some treatments are not suitable for every woman. That is why the decision is always made at the consultation.

Looking after yourself in the long term

Menopause is also a good time to review your medium and long-term health: bones, heart, breasts and pelvic floor. At the consultation we explain which check-ups suit you.

Frequently asked questions

At what age does menopause start?

The average age is around 50, but there is wide variation between women. The changes of perimenopause can begin a few years earlier.

How do I know if I am in menopause?

It is generally recognised by symptoms and by the absence of periods for twelve months in a row. In some cases tests are requested, but they are not always needed.

How long do the symptoms last?

It varies a lot. In some women they last a few months and in others several years. If they affect you, there are options to relieve them.

Is hormone therapy safe?

It depends on each woman, her age, when menopause began and her personal and family history. That is why it is decided individually at the consultation, weighing benefits and risks.

Do I need any tests?

Not always. Only those that give useful information for your case are requested.

Can vaginal dryness be treated?

There are several options, assessed case by case. It is a very common symptom and worth mentioning at the consultation.

Can I get pregnant during perimenopause?

Yes. As long as ovulation continues, pregnancy is possible, although fertility declines. If you do not want a pregnancy, ask when you can stop using contraception.

How often should I have check-ups?

It depends on your age and history. At the consultation we agree a schedule of check-ups adapted to you.

Can I book an appointment in English?

Yes. Dr. Baixauli sees patients in English and Spanish. Just mention it when you book.
