Frequently asked questions

How often should I see a gynecologist?

As a general guideline, a regular check-up is recommended, usually once a year. The exact frequency depends on your age, your history and your previous test results, and the doctor will advise you during the visit. If you notice any symptom, do not wait for your annual check-up.

What is a Pap smear for?

A Pap smear (or an HPV test) can detect changes in the cells of the cervix early, before they become a problem. The age to start and how often depend on each woman and are assessed during the consultation.

How should I prepare for the visit?

Bring any previous reports, ultrasounds or lab results, and remember the date of your last period. If you are going to have a Pap smear, it is usually advised not to be on your period and to avoid intercourse, vaginal douching, and vaginal creams or suppositories for two days beforehand, unless you have been told otherwise.

What is a hysteroscopy and is it done at the clinic?

It is an examination of the inside of the uterus with a very thin camera passed through the vagina. It is performed at the clinic. It allows the doctor to look inside the uterine cavity and investigate causes of abnormal bleeding or fertility problems. The doctor will explain the procedure and how to prepare.

When should I seek care for abnormal bleeding?

See a doctor if you have very heavy or very long periods, bleeding between periods, bleeding after intercourse, or any bleeding after menopause. Do not wait, because many causes are easily treated.

What is the pelvic floor and when should I consult about it?

It is the group of muscles and tissues that support the bladder, uterus and bowel. Consult if you leak urine when coughing, laughing or exercising, if you feel a bulge or heaviness in the genital area, or if you have pelvic pain. Treatment options exist and are assessed case by case.

What contraceptive methods are available?

There are hormonal methods (pill, patch, ring, implant), the IUD, barrier methods such as condoms, and permanent methods. No single method is best for every woman: the choice depends on your age, health, preferences and plans for pregnancy. We advise you during the visit so you can choose the one that suits you.

What symptoms does menopause cause, and can they be treated?

The most common are hot flashes, vaginal dryness, changes in sleep and mood, and irregular periods in the years before. There are options to relieve them, including hormone therapy when indicated, after reviewing your history and risks.

Where are surgical procedures performed?

Assessment, indication and follow-up take place at the clinic. Surgery, and treatment of gynecologic cancer when needed, are normally carried out in a hospital. The clinic coordinates the process and follows your progress.
