Frequently asked questions

When should I schedule my first pregnancy visit?

As soon as you have a positive pregnancy test, ideally within the first weeks. At this first visit the pregnancy is confirmed, the estimated due date is calculated and the schedule of tests is planned.

How many ultrasounds are done during pregnancy?

Usually one control ultrasound per trimester is scheduled, but the number and timing depend on each pregnancy and are set by the doctor during the visit.

What is prenatal diagnosis?

It is the set of tests that show how the pregnancy is progressing and estimate the risk of some conditions in the baby, such as first-trimester screening (blood test and ultrasound). These are screening tests: they indicate a probability, not a diagnosis. If the risk is high, the options to confirm it are explained.

Can I choose where to give birth?

Yes. Delivery takes place at the hospital of your choice. We talk it over calmly during the pregnancy so you reach the day with peace of mind.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A pregnancy in which there is a previous illness (such as hypertension or diabetes) or a complication during gestation that needs closer follow-up. A high-risk label does not mean problems will occur; it means the pregnancy is watched more closely.

Which vaccines are recommended during pregnancy?

The flu vaccine in season and the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine in the third trimester are recommended, to protect both mother and baby. The doctor will tell you the right time and answer your questions.

What should I watch in my diet during pregnancy?

A varied, balanced diet. It is advised to avoid alcohol and tobacco, not to eat raw or undercooked meat, fish or eggs, to limit large oily fish because of mercury, and to cook cured meats well or avoid them if they are not fully cured. Folic acid is recommended before conception and during the first weeks.

When should I go to the emergency room during pregnancy?

Go if you have vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, leaking fluid, fever, regular contractions before term, a severe headache with blurred vision, or if your baby moves much less than usual. In a medical emergency, call 112.

When is the check-up after delivery?

A check-up in the weeks after delivery is recommended to confirm your recovery, discuss contraception and answer questions about breastfeeding. The clinic also provides postpartum care.
